Overview

Hypoimmune EHM refers to a genetically engineered cell therapy platform designed to evade immune rejection in allogeneic transplantation. The "hypoimmune" approach involves modifying cells—such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)—to disrupt expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II molecules, thereby preventing recognition by the adaptive immune system, and overexpressing CD47 to inhibit innate immune responses from macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells. This technology aims to enable off-the-shelf cell therapies without the need for immunosuppression, with potential applications in diseases such as cancer, type 1 diabetes, and regenerative medicine. Sana Biotechnology is a leading developer of this platform.
