Hypoxanthine is a naturally occurring purine derivative and an intermediate in the metabolism of adenosine and nucleic acids via the salvage pathway. It is present in cells as a constituent of nucleic acids, particularly in tRNA as its nucleoside inosine. Hypoxanthine serves as a substrate and nitrogen source for certain cell, bacterial, and parasite cultures—most notably required for *Plasmodium falciparum* (malaria parasite) growth due to its role in nucleic acid synthesis and energy metabolism. In biological systems, it is produced from adenine by deamination or from AMP/IMP during ATP consumption (e.g., muscle contraction). Hypoxanthine can be oxidized to xanthine by xanthine oxidoreductase. It also acts as a potential free radical generator involved in posthypoxic reoxygenation injury through oxygen radical production, modulates benzodiazepine receptors, inhibits brain phosphodiesterase activity, and may influence cytotoxic drug effects[1][2][5][8].
