Overview

Hypoxen is a small molecule antihypoxant and antioxidant drug developed and marketed by Valenta Pharmaceuticals. Its active ingredient is sodium polydihydroxyphenylenethiosulfonate, a poly(dihydroxyphenylene) thiosulfonate-based compound originally developed in 1976 at the Institute of Macromolecular Compounds of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Approved for medical use in Russia in 1996, Hypoxen works by increasing the efficiency of tissue respiration under hypoxic conditions, particularly in organs with high metabolic rates such as the brain, cardiac muscle, and liver. It acts as an electron transfer agent in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, reducing oxygen consumption and maintaining energy production. The drug is indicated for various types of hypoxia, physical and emotional stress, and to improve endurance and performance. It is also utilized in the management of CNS disorders and cardiovascular conditions where oxygen supply is compromised. Since 2023, it has been included in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Monitoring Program.
