Overview

Hypromellose, also known as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used primarily as an ophthalmic lubricant. It belongs to the class of cellulose ethers and functions as a tear substitute by increasing the viscosity of the tear film, thereby prolonging its retention time on the ocular surface and reducing tear evaporation. Hypromellose is widely used for the symptomatic relief of dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca), including conditions caused by computer vision syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, and peri-operative ocular irritation following surgeries such as LASIK or cataract extraction. By mimicking the action of natural mucins, it stabilizes the tear film and protects the corneal epithelium from damage and inflammation.
