Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Hyptis spicigera* essential oil is a botanical extract obtained from the leaves of *Hyptis spicigera* (commonly known as black sesame or spicigera), an aromatic plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family native to tropical Africa. The essential oil is rich in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, including alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, and beta-caryophyllene. It has been investigated for its insecticidal, larvicidal, and repellent properties against malaria-transmitting mosquitoes, particularly *Anopheles gambiae*. Additionally, research has demonstrated its potential in malaria transmission-blocking assays, where it significantly reduces the prevalence and density of *Plasmodium falciparum* oocysts in mosquitoes. It also exhibits antibacterial and antioxidant activities.
