Overview

**I-123 IPT** is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent, where iodine-123 is chemically incorporated into the cocaine analog N-(3-iodopropene-2-yl)-2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-chlorophenyl)tropane (IPT). This compound acts as a selective ligand for the dopamine transporter (DAT) and is used for single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging of dopaminergic neurons in the human brain. Following intravenous injection, I-123 IPT binds to dopamine reuptake sites located in the basal ganglia, allowing for visualization and quantification of dopamine transporter density. It is primarily used in the diagnosis of **Parkinson's disease** and other neurodegenerative disorders involving dopaminergic systems[2]. The mechanism of action involves **selective binding to dopamine transporter (DAT)**, allowing measurement of transporter density changes associated with movement disorders.
