I-131 MOv18 is a radioimmunotherapeutic agent consisting of the murine monoclonal antibody MOv18 labeled with the radioactive isotope Iodine-131. The MOv18 antibody specifically targets the alpha-folate receptor (FR-alpha), a cell-surface glycoprotein that is highly overexpressed in the majority of non-mucinous epithelial ovarian cancers but has limited expression in normal tissues. When administered, typically via the intraperitoneal route to treat minimal residual disease, the antibody binds to FR-alpha on tumor cells, allowing the Iodine-131 to deliver localized beta radiation. This radiation induces DNA damage and cell death in the targeted malignant cells. Clinical studies have primarily focused on its use as a consolidation therapy for ovarian cancer patients with small-volume residual disease following chemotherapy.
