The IB160-adjuvanted inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine (internal code: VII3a-IB) is a vaccine candidate developed by Instituto Butantan for the prevention of seasonal influenza, particularly in older adults (aged 60 and older). The vaccine consists of a split-virion, inactivated trivalent influenza antigen propagated in embryonated eggs, combined with IB160, a proprietary squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant developed by Instituto Butantan that is compositionally similar to MF59. It targets the hemagglutinin (HA) surface protein of influenza viruses to elicit protective antibody responses. The vaccine is currently in Phase III clinical development in Brazil, where it is being evaluated for non-inferiority to a high-dose inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine.
