Overview

Ibandronic acid is a third-generation, nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate used primarily to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, thereby reducing bone loss and increasing bone mineral density. This action helps lower the risk of vertebral fractures in patients with osteoporosis. Ibandronic acid is also indicated for the prevention of skeletal-related events (such as pathological fractures) in patients with breast cancer and bone metastases, as well as for the treatment of tumor-induced hypercalcemia. The drug is available as oral tablets (typically 150 mg monthly) or intravenous injections/infusions (every three months or at other intervals depending on indication). It was first described in 1993 and approved for medical use in 1996[2][5][6].
