Overview

Iberogast (also known as STW 5) is a clinically proven, multi-target herbal preparation used for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, most notably functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is a fixed combination of nine hydroethanolic extracts: *Iberis amara*, *Angelica archangelica*, *Matricaria recutita*, *Carum carvi*, *Silybum marianum*, *Melissa officinalis*, *Mentha x piperita*, *Chelidonium majus*, and *Glycyrrhiza glabra*. The drug exhibits a dual effect on gastrointestinal motility, acting as a prokinetic in the hypomotile antrum (via 5-HT4 agonism and muscarinic stimulation) and as a spasmolytic in the hypermotile corpus (via 5-HT3 antagonism and other pathways). Additionally, Iberogast demonstrates anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mucosal protective properties, and it reduces visceral hypersensitivity by modulating intestinal afferent sensitivity. Originally developed by Steigerwald Arzneimittelwerk, it is now a key product in Bayer's consumer health portfolio.
