IBgard

IBgard is an over-the-counter medical food and dietary supplement specifically formulated for the dietary management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Developed by IM HealthScience (now a part of Nestlé Health Science), it contains ultra-purified peppermint oil (Ultramen®) as its active ingredient, with L-menthol being the primary component. The product utilizes a patented Site-Specific Targeting (SST) technology, which consists of triple-coated, sustained-release microspheres designed to bypass the stomach and release the peppermint oil directly in the small intestine. Its mechanism of action is multifaceted, primarily involving calcium channel antagonism in gastrointestinal smooth muscle to provide antispasmodic effects. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory, carminative, kappa opioid agonist, and serotonergic antagonist properties. IBgard is clinically indicated to manage a combination of IBS symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, and urgency, with an onset of action reported in as little as 24 hours.
