Overview

Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive indole alkaloid found in the root bark of the West African shrub *Tabernanthe iboga*. It is characterized by hallucinogenic and oneirogenic (dream-like) effects. Ibogaine has been traditionally used in Central Africa for spiritual and ritual purposes. In modern research, it has shown potential for treating substance use disorders, particularly opioid addiction, by alleviating withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Its mechanism of action involves complex interactions with multiple neurotransmitter systems, including opioid receptors (notably κ-opioid receptor), serotonin transporters (SERT), sigma receptors, NMDA receptors, dopamine systems, acetylcholine systems, and glutamate systems[2][3][4]. Ibogaine’s effects are prolonged—onset occurs within 30 minutes to 3 hours after ingestion and can last more than 24 hours[4]. The drug is not approved for medical use in most countries due to safety concerns such as cardiotoxicity and risk of fatal arrhythmias[1][2].
