Overview
ibogaine + citalopram is an oral small molecule combination therapy being developed by PsyRx for the treatment of mental health disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and addiction. The drug candidate integrates a microdose of ibogaine hydrochloride—a psychoactive alkaloid derived from the African *Tabernanthe iboga* plant—with the FDA-approved selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) citalopram. This novel approach aims to leverage the rapid-acting antidepressant properties of ibogaine while maintaining the therapeutic effects of SSRIs, potentially reducing the onset of action from several weeks to just a few days. By using microdoses of ibogaine, the therapy seeks to minimize the intense hallucinogenic effects and potential cardiac side effects associated with full-dose psychedelic treatments.
