IBSA r-hCG is a recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin (r-hCG) developed by IBSA Institut Biochimique SA for the treatment of infertility. Produced using recombinant DNA technology, it serves as a highly purified biosynthetic analog of the natural hormone hCG, providing a consistent alternative to urinary-derived formulations like IBSA's own Choriomon. The drug acts as a potent agonist of the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR) and also exhibits activity at the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR). In clinical practice, IBSA r-hCG is used to trigger final oocyte maturation and ovulation in women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation as part of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or ovulation induction. By mimicking the endogenous LH surge, it promotes the final stages of follicular development and supports the formation of the corpus luteum. Clinical studies, such as NCT04541628, have compared IBSA r-hCG to established recombinant products like Ovitrelle to evaluate its efficacy and safety in IVF/ICSI cycles.
