Overview

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) widely used to relieve pain, reduce fever, and decrease inflammation. It acts as a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX), blocking both COX‑1 and COX‑2 enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes from arachidonic acid. By reducing prostaglandin production, ibuprofen alleviates symptoms such as pain, swelling, stiffness, and fever. It is indicated for mild to moderate pain (including headache, toothache, back pain), dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), musculoskeletal disorders, migraines, minor injuries, and fever reduction in adults and children over 6 months old. Ibuprofen can be administered orally or intravenously[1][2][3][4][5].
