ibuprofen + oxycodone

Ibuprofen + oxycodone is a combination analgesic regimen consisting of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ibuprofen and the semi-synthetic opioid agonist oxycodone. This combination is utilized for the management of acute pain, particularly in emergency department settings for conditions such as ureteral calculi (kidney stones). Ibuprofen provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects by non-selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate inflammation and pain. Oxycodone acts primarily as an agonist at mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, modulating the perception of and emotional response to pain. In a clinical trial sponsored by MaineHealth (NCT00311610), this combination served as the standard therapy control arm to evaluate the efficacy of tamsulosin in facilitating the passage of lower ureteral stones.
