Ibuprofen + propacetamol is a fixed-dose combination of two analgesic agents used for the management of acute pain, particularly in postoperative settings. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis responsible for inflammation, pain, and fever. Propacetamol is a prodrug of paracetamol (acetaminophen), which acts primarily as an analgesic and antipyretic by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system. The combination leverages complementary mechanisms—ibuprofen’s peripheral anti-inflammatory action and propacetamol’s central analgesic effect—to provide superior pain relief compared to monotherapy with either agent alone. Clinical studies have shown that this combination reduces the need for opioid rescue medication after surgery in children without increasing adverse events[5]. It is especially considered when both anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects are desired or when monotherapy does not provide adequate pain control.
