Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ibuprofen 2% mouthwash is an investigational topical formulation developed by researchers at the Islamic Azad University, Sanandaj, for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. As a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), ibuprofen acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which in turn reduces the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. In the context of periodontal disease, this formulation is used for subgingival irrigation as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) to improve clinical parameters such as probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and bleeding indices by localized reduction of inflammation within the periodontal pockets. The mouthwash was specifically manufactured for clinical research by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Islamic Azad University, Tehran.
