Overview

Ibuprofen piconol is a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is the piconol (2-pyridylmethanol) ester of ibuprofen. It is primarily utilized for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, including acne vulgaris, eczema, and various forms of dermatitis. The drug functions by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, specifically COX-1 and COX-2, which reduces the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins at the site of application. This localized action provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects with minimal systemic absorption compared to oral ibuprofen. In the treatment of acne, ibuprofen piconol also demonstrates inhibitory effects on the lipase activity of *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*), which helps to further mitigate the inflammatory response in acne lesions. It is widely marketed in East Asian countries, such as Japan and China, for both prescription and over-the-counter dermatological use.
