Overview

IC41 is a synthetic peptide vaccine developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. It consists of five to seven synthetic peptides derived from HCV proteins, specifically designed to include CD4 and CD8 T-cell epitopes, and is formulated with the adjuvant poly-L-arginine to enhance immune response. The vaccine aims to induce HCV-specific Th1/Tc1 immune responses by stimulating interferon gamma-secreting T-cells in patients with chronic HCV infection. Clinical studies have shown that IC41 can elicit significant proliferative T-cell responses and interferon gamma secretion in both healthy volunteers and patients who did not respond or relapsed after standard therapy for hepatitis C. However, while immunogenicity was demonstrated, only a minority of patients experienced transient reductions in viral RNA levels. Development efforts included phase II clinical trials as an add-on or alternative to standard antiviral therapies. Developed by Intercell AG.
