iCALM

iCALM (Inhaled cationic airway lining modulator) is a cationic aerosol therapy composed of 1.29% calcium chloride dissolved in 0.9% isotonic saline. It functions by enhancing the biophysical barrier function of the airway lining fluid and priming the host defense response. This mechanism is being investigated for its ability to attenuate bronchitis caused by inhaled particles and to decrease airway inflammation, as demonstrated in a proof-of-concept study where it attenuated allergen-induced increases in sputum eosinophils and inflammatory mediators like IL-5, MCP-1, and eotaxin in asthmatic subjects.
