Overview

Icariin-conditioned serum (ICS) is an experimental biological preparation used in Traditional Chinese Medicine research to evaluate the therapeutic potential of icariin and its metabolites under conditions that mimic in vivo metabolism. It is produced by collecting blood serum from animals, such as rats or rabbits, following the oral administration of icariin, a prenylated flavonoid derived from the *Epimedium* plant species. This method, known as serum pharmacology, ensures that the experimental medium contains not only the parent compound but also its bioactive metabolites (e.g., icariside II) and potentially induced endogenous factors. In musculoskeletal research, ICS is investigated for its ability to promote chondrocyte proliferation, inhibit inflammatory cytokines, and regulate subchondral bone remodeling. It is frequently studied in the context of osteoarthritis and cartilage repair, often delivered locally via tissue engineering scaffolds like thiolated chitosan.
