Overview

Icatibant is a synthetic decapeptide and a competitive antagonist selective for the bradykinin B2 receptor. It is used to treat acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults. HAE is caused by an absence or dysfunction of C1-esterase inhibitor, leading to excessive production of bradykinin—a vasodilator responsible for swelling, inflammation, and pain characteristic of HAE attacks. Icatibant works by blocking the binding and action of bradykinin at the B2 receptor on cell surfaces, thereby reducing or preventing these symptoms during acute episodes. The drug can be self-administered subcutaneously and typically provides symptom relief within 2 to 2.5 hours after injection[1][2][3][4][5][6].
