This combination regimen represents a 'biocompatible' strategy for peritoneal dialysis (PD), specifically utilized in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The regimen consists of several distinct solutions: icodextrin (a glucose polymer) used for long dwells to provide sustained ultrafiltration without high glucose exposure; amino acid-based solutions that serve as both an osmotic agent and a nutritional supplement; and solutions buffered with bicarbonate and lactate to maintain a physiological pH. By reducing exposure to high concentrations of glucose and glucose degradation products (GDPs), this multi-component approach aims to preserve the peritoneal membrane's integrity and the patient's residual renal function (RRF) more effectively than conventional, acidic, lactate-only glucose solutions.
