Overview

**Icosapent**, also called eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA, is a long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid used in this Charité-sponsored study as the principal active nutritional component of an EPA-rich, protein- and energy-dense oral nutritional supplement. The completed randomized pilot trial evaluated whether two months of supplementation could improve functional status and quality of life in malnourished patients with colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, or cholangiocarcinoma. EPA was investigated as a potentially anticatabolic nutritional substrate in cancer-associated malnutrition. ([clinicaltrials.gov](https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT00168987))
