Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Icosapent ethyl + rosuvastatin is an oral fixed-dose combination therapy developed by Althera Pharma for the management of dyslipidemia and the reduction of cardiovascular risk. This combination pairs icosapent ethyl, a highly purified ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), with rosuvastatin, a potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). Icosapent ethyl primarily targets triglyceride reduction by inhibiting hepatic enzymes such as diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT) and enhancing fatty acid oxidation through the activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha). Additionally, EPA exerts pleiotropic cardiovascular benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and plaque-stabilizing effects. Rosuvastatin complements this by inhibiting the rate-limiting step of endogenous cholesterol synthesis, significantly lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Together, the two components provide a comprehensive approach to lipid management by addressing both the cholesterol and triglyceride pathways.
