Overview

ID1201 is a small molecule drug consisting of a 30% ethanol extract from the fruits of Melia toosendan (chinaberry). It was developed by Ildong Pharmaceutical for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The mechanism involves modulation of amyloid precursor protein (APP) metabolism by stimulating α-secretase activity via the PI3K/Akt pathway. This leads to increased non-amyloidogenic processing (higher soluble APPα), reduced amyloidogenic processing (lower soluble APPβ and Aβ), and decreased β-amyloid plaque formation in preclinical models. Preclinical studies demonstrated cognitive benefits in animal models and reduction in brain Aβ deposits[3][4][6]. Clinical development reached phase 2 for Alzheimer's disease but was discontinued[2].
