Overview

Idarubicin + cytarabine is a combination chemotherapy regimen primarily used for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Idarubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II activity, leading to DNA damage and cell death. Cytarabine is a pyrimidine nucleoside analog that acts as an antimetabolite by inhibiting DNA synthesis during the S phase of the cell cycle. The combination exploits synergistic effects to eliminate leukemic cells more effectively than either agent alone. This regimen can be administered in standard doses (commonly known as "7+3") or high-dose protocols ("HiDAC/idarubicin"). Both drugs are approved for use in AML and have been studied extensively in both newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory settings[1][3][8].
