Idebenone + prednisone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents, idebenone and prednisone. Idebenone is a synthetic analogue of ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10) that acts as an antioxidant and supports mitochondrial function by transferring electrons directly to complex III of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, thereby increasing ATP production and reducing oxidative stress[1][5]. It has been investigated for use in neurodegenerative diseases such as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), Alzheimer's disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and other neuromuscular or mitochondrial disorders[1][3][5]. Prednisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties; it is converted in the liver to its active form prednisolone. Prednisone acts primarily by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, modulating gene expression to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines and immune responses[2]. The combination may be used experimentally or off-label where both antioxidant/mitochondrial support (idebenone) and anti-inflammatory/immunosuppressive effects (prednisone) are desired. There are no widely recognized brand names or regulatory approvals for this specific fixed-dose combination.
