The iDNA-based Venezuelan equine encephalitis vaccine is a novel vaccine technology that combines advantages of both DNA and live attenuated vaccines. It uses an infectious DNA platform (iDNA) that encodes the full genome of a live-attenuated Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) vaccine strain. When administered, the iDNA launches replication of the attenuated virus in vivo, inducing protective immune responses against VEEV. This approach requires lower doses than conventional DNA vaccines and eliminates the need for cold-chain storage of live virus vaccines. The technology has shown promising results in animal models, with successful seroconversion and protection against lethal VEEV challenge.
