IGAN Biosciences is developing a bacterial-derived IgA1 protease as an enzyme therapy for the treatment of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and IgA vasculitis. The therapy utilizes a recombinant version of a naturally occurring protease, specifically from *Haemophilus influenzae*, which is engineered to target and cleave human IgA1 at the hinge region. This catalytic mechanism is designed to dissolve and remove pathogenic IgA1 deposits and immune complexes from the kidney mesangium, potentially restoring renal function. The drug is intended as an adjunct therapy for patients who are partial or non-responders to BAFF/APRIL-targeted biologics and is currently in preclinical development.
