IGT001 is a cell therapy composed of human rod precursor cells (hRPs) encapsulated within a hyaluronic acid and gelatin hydrogel. The therapy is designed to address retinitis pigmentosa (RP) by providing a sustainably delivered intervention to repair and restore retinal cells. This encapsulation enables protection of the cells against shear stress during injection, extends their viability and therapeutic effect in the retina, and minimizes immune activation, potentially allowing repeated dosing. The hydrogel degrades over time, and the cells are naturally cleared, aiming to provide durable restoration of visual function for mid-stage RP. IGT001 was originally developed by Ingel Therapeutics and is also associated with Shanghai General Hospital/Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in clinical development. The therapy is in early clinical development, with Phase 1 trials planned or recruiting for RP[3][5][7][10].
