IK-950 is a small molecule inhibitor of the soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) enzyme. It was developed as a water-soluble urea-based derivative to investigate the physiological roles of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), which are metabolites of arachidonic acid produced by cytochrome P450 epoxygenases. In the systemic circulation, EETs typically act as vasodilators; however, in the pulmonary vasculature, IK-950 has been shown to potentiate hypoxia-induced pulmonary vasoconstriction by preventing the degradation of EETs into their corresponding dihydroxy derivatives (DHETs). This suggests that in the lungs, EETs function as vasoconstrictors and contribute to the development of pulmonary hypertension.
