il-1β siRNA is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to silence the expression of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine. In the context of oncology research, particularly melanoma, IL-1β is often aberrantly expressed and contributes to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and tumor progression. By utilizing the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway, this siRNA targets IL-1β mRNA for degradation, thereby inhibiting the production of the cytokine. Research in melanoma cell lines (such as A375 and WM793) has shown that knockdown of IL-1β leads to significant decreases in inflammatory markers like Cox-2, reduced reactive oxygen species, and suppression of cell growth through the induction of autophagy and upregulation of tumor suppressors p53 and p21.
