**IL-2 gene-transfected KB cells** are a form of therapeutic cancer vaccine created by genetically modifying human KB carcinoma cells (a cell line derived from oral squamous cell carcinoma) to express and secrete interleukin-2 (IL-2). These modified cells are typically irradiated to prevent proliferation and then administered as a form of autologous or allogeneic cell-based immunotherapy. The therapeutic principle is that localized IL-2 secretion by the modified tumor cells stimulates a strong antitumor immune response, activating cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells against the tumor, and potentially establishing tumor-specific immunological memory. This approach is an experimental form of gene therapy and cancer immunotherapy primarily evaluated in preclinical settings and early-phase clinical trials, with particular application in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
