IL13CAR-T is a type of chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy in which a patient's T cells are genetically engineered to express a CAR that incorporates modified interleukin-13 (IL13) as its antigen recognition domain. This receptor enables the T cells to specifically recognize and bind to IL13 receptor alpha 2 (IL13Rα2), a protein overexpressed in several solid tumors such as glioblastoma, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, melanoma, ovarian carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, breast cancer, and lung cancer, while having limited expression in normal tissues. The engineered T cells have enhanced cytotoxic capabilities against cancer cells presenting IL13Rα2 and demonstrate specificity based on modifications in IL13 to reduce binding to IL13Rα1, hence minimizing off-tumor toxicity. IL13CAR-T is in preclinical and early clinical development, mainly for the treatment of glioblastoma and other solid tumors[1][2].
