Overview

ILB is a novel, low molecular weight dextran sulphate compound developed as a neuroprotective agent for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Its mechanism of action involves acting as a pleiotropic molecule that targets multiple pathways implicated in neuronal loss and dysfunction. The drug mobilizes and modulates heparin-binding growth factors (notably hepatocyte growth factor, HGF) and cytokines from the endothelial bed, which initiates downstream cascades affecting gene expression related to cell survival, metabolism, inflammation control, glutamate toxicity attenuation, mitochondrial function normalization, and tissue repair. Preclinical studies have shown that ILB can restore brain energy metabolism after traumatic brain injury in animal models. In clinical trials for ALS patients (Phase II), subcutaneous administration of ILB was safe and well-tolerated with minimal side effects; it showed potential to slow disease progression by supporting endogenous repair mechanisms and rebalancing inflammatory responses[1][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].
