Ilex paraguariensis leaf, commonly known as Yerba Mate, is a botanical extract derived from a South American tree. It is primarily utilized as a dietary supplement and in traditional beverages for its purported metabolic and antioxidant benefits. The extract contains a diverse array of bioactive constituents, including xanthines (caffeine, theobromine, theophylline), polyphenols (chlorogenic acid), flavonoids (quercetin, rutin), and triterpenoid saponins. Pharmacologically, it has been shown to inhibit pancreatic lipase, thereby reducing dietary fat absorption, and to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which plays a central role in energy homeostasis.
