Overview

IMBZ18g is a novel 1β-methylcarbapenem antibiotic developed for the treatment of severe bacterial infections, including complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) and acute pyelonephritis. It was co-developed by the Institute of Medicinal Biotechnology (IMB) of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in collaboration with Guangzhou Aiqixi New Drug Research and Hunan Sailong Pharmaceutical. As a member of the carbapenem class, IMBZ18g exerts its antibacterial activity by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential enzymes involved in the final stages of bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis. This inhibition leads to cell wall instability and subsequent bacterial lysis. IMBZ18g is administered via intravenous injection and is currently undergoing Phase II clinical evaluation in China to assess its efficacy and safety compared to meropenem.
