Drug intelligence / Profile preview
IMD-Omega is a novel liquid crystalline nanoparticle-based oral formulation of omega-3 acid ethyl esters, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl esters, developed by IMD Pharm Inc. for the management of hyperlipidemia and hypertriglyceridemia. The formulation is designed to overcome the bioavailability limitations of conventional omega-3 products by spontaneously forming liquid crystalline nanoparticles in the gastrointestinal tract, which significantly enhances the dissolution and permeability of the lipophilic fatty acids. In clinical trials, IMD-Omega demonstrated a 1.7- to 2.3-fold increase in bioavailability compared to the reference product Omacor (Lovaza), allowing for a reduced daily dose (580 mg vs. 1000 mg) and a lower pill burden for patients while maintaining therapeutic efficacy and a favorable safety profile.
