Overview

Imelasomeran is a messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine component encoding the full-length, codon-optimized, pre-fusion stabilized spike (S) glycoprotein of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant (B.1.1.529). It is used as part of a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine formulation in combination with elasomeran, which encodes the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 spike protein[1][5]. The mRNA is encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles for delivery into host cells following intramuscular injection. Once inside cells, the mRNA is translated into viral spike protein, which stimulates an immune response by eliciting both T-cell and B-cell responses to generate neutralizing antibodies against COVID-19[5][6]. Imelasomeran was developed by Moderna and is indicated as a booster dose for active immunization to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2[5].
