Imepitoin

Imepitoin is a centrally acting antiepileptic drug developed for veterinary use, primarily in dogs. It is approved in the European Union for the treatment of canine idiopathic epilepsy and is also used to manage noise aversion and anxiety-related behaviors in dogs. Imepitoin acts as a low-affinity partial agonist at the benzodiazepine site of the gamma-aminobutyric acid A (GABA A) receptor, enhancing GABAergic inhibitory neurotransmission but with lower intrinsic efficacy than full agonists like diazepam. This mechanism helps reduce excessive neuronal activity associated with seizures and has anxiolytic effects that can alleviate fear-based behaviors. Additionally, imepitoin exhibits weak blocking activity on voltage-gated calcium channels, which may further contribute to its anticonvulsant properties.
