Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide belonging to the neonicotinoid class, which are neuro-active chemicals modeled after nicotine. It acts by binding to and blocking nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system of insects, leading to paralysis and death. Imidacloprid is much more selective for insect receptors than mammalian ones, making it highly toxic to insects but less so to mammals. It is used globally for pest control in agriculture (as a seed treatment or foliar spray), termite control, flea control on pets, and other applications. Originally developed and patented by Bayer CropScience (part of Bayer AG), it has been marketed under numerous trade names and remains widely used despite regulatory restrictions in some regions due to environmental concerns[3][4][5][6].
