Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Imidacloprid + permethrin** is a veterinary pharmaceutical combination used topically as an ectoparasiticide, primarily in dogs. Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide that acts as an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in parasites, leading to paralysis and death by inhibiting cholinergic transmission. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that targets voltage-gated sodium channels in arthropods, causing hyperexcitability and death. The combination is synergistic: imidacloprid activates arthropod ganglia, increasing permethrin efficacy. The product is indicated for the prevention and treatment of flea infestations, biting lice, tick infestations, sand flies, mosquitoes, and stable flies in dogs. It provides both insecticidal and repellent (anti-feeding) efficacy, reducing the risk of pathogen transmission (e.g., ehrlichiosis, leishmaniasis), with effects lasting up to four weeks. It is for dermal (spot-on) administration and is not to be used on cats due to toxicity[2][3][1].
