Overview

Imidafenacin is a small molecule antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) agent used primarily for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB), including symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence. It acts by competitively antagonizing muscarinic acetylcholine receptors—mainly M3 and M1 subtypes—with high selectivity for bladder tissue over other organs. By blocking these receptors, imidafenacin reduces detrusor muscle contractions and inhibits acetylcholine release in the bladder, thereby decreasing urinary frequency and urgency. The drug was developed jointly by Kyorin Pharmaceutical and Ono Pharmaceutical and is marketed under the brand names Staybla (Ono) and Uritos (Kyorin), particularly in Japan[2][8][3][4].
