Overview

Imiglitazar is a dual peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) alpha and gamma agonist that was developed by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and associated dyslipidemia. By activating PPARγ, it improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, while its PPARα agonism helps regulate lipid metabolism, potentially lowering triglycerides and increasing HDL cholesterol. Despite showing efficacy in improving glycemic control and lipid profiles in clinical trials, Takeda discontinued its development in 2005, likely due to safety concerns or a strategic shift in their metabolic pipeline, a common fate for many glitazar class drugs during that period.
