Imiloxan is a selective small molecule antagonist of the alpha-2B adrenergic receptor (α2B-AR). It is primarily utilized as a pharmacological research tool to investigate the specific physiological and pathological roles of the α2-adrenoceptor subtypes. In preclinical studies, imiloxan is frequently used to dissect the mechanisms of sympathetic outflow, nociception, and metabolic regulation. Research has shown its involvement in modulating cardioaccelerator sympathetic tone, vasopressor responses, and gastrointestinal transit in various animal models, including those for diabetes and irritable bowel syndrome. By selectively blocking the α2B subtype, imiloxan helps researchers distinguish its effects from the α2A and α2C subtypes, which often mediate different or even opposing biological responses.
