A combination antibiotic therapy consisting of imipenem (a carbapenem antibiotic) and levofloxacin (a fluoroquinolone antibiotic). This combination has been studied for its effectiveness against bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It has shown promising results in preventing the emergence of resistance. In vitro studies using a 2-compartment pharmacokinetic model showed that while both drugs individually led to rapid regrowth of bacteria due to selection of resistant subpopulations, the combination rapidly eradicated all tested P. aeruginosa strains. This combination therapy was effective in preventing resistance emergence even when subpopulations resistant to both drugs (e.g., mexEF-oprN-overexpressing subpopulations resistant to both levofloxacin and imipenem) were present.
