imipenem + cilastatin

Imipenem + cilastatin is a combination antibacterial drug used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Imipenem is a carbapenem antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to bacterial cell death. Cilastatin is a renal dehydropeptidase-I inhibitor that prevents the enzymatic degradation of imipenem in the kidneys, thereby increasing its effectiveness and duration of action. The combination is indicated for infections such as endocarditis, respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, bacteremia (bloodstream infection), skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections[1][2][3][4][5][6][8]. It was first approved in 1985 under the brand name Primaxin by Merck & Co.
