Imipramine + liothyronine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily in the management of depressive disorders, particularly when standard antidepressant therapy is insufficient. Imipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) that inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, thereby increasing their synaptic concentrations and improving mood in patients with depression. Liothyronine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3), which can accelerate and potentiate the clinical response to TCAs in depressive disorders, especially in cases resistant to standard treatment. The combination has been shown to enhance antidepressant efficacy compared to imipramine alone, possibly by modulating serotonergic neurotransmission at both pre- and postsynaptic levels[1][3]. This regimen may also reduce certain side effects associated with imipramine monotherapy[3].
